Garretts' World

Happenings in the world of the Garretts'

Dear Simon and Isabella...

It has been while since Daddy (me) posted about your progress here on Garretts’ World.  As you grow up you will be sure of the fact that time does not stand still, just as much as you will be sure of the fact that the free butt cleaning service stops as you approach year three, and since I am counting weeks since the last post, it is time that I wrote some words.

I have no excuse for my lack of posting, only to say that there are a lot of readers out there that like to read about software and technology - what Daddy does for a living, and so I have been chatting a lot about stuff that you'll probably never care about.  Face it kids, your Dad is a geek, a nerd, an intellectual, no matter how you put it, I’ll never be guy that; had a harem of woman in college, has ever performed a bungee jump, or sang in a cool band that could have been famous.  However, at your tender young age, neither of you care, one ounce, about my nerdy tendencies, and happen to think that your old man a fun kind of guy – at least that is how I see it judging by your reaction to my silliness, and the games that we play together.  So I plan to enjoy this time for as long as possible, or at least until the day comes when you’d rather not be seen with your "old man" in public.

Simon, you turned two at the end of September, which means you are officially a toddler and in your “terrible two’s” phase of life, only you must have an insider source into the ways of life because you started the tantrums (complete with wall head butting, loss of use of your legs, and taking a run up before landing on the floor face down with kicking legs) six months ago. None the less, your still adorable, and both your Mother and I cannot help but melt every time you give us a cheesy grin when you want something, say “tank-yew” after receiving your milk, and make engine sounds as you play with your toy tractors.

Did I say Tractor?  Simon, “Tractor” has become the sacred word in our household, any mention of the word sends you into sheer excitement.  Tractors - you cannot get enough of them.  It has to be a hereditary thing, because although I do not share your passion for farm equipment, I do have a thing for cars, and have been known to go weak at the knees over a beautiful piece of motor engineering (I can hear Mommy heckling as she reads this).  The theme of your 2nd birthday party was about, none other than, John Deere, and your friends and family all came to make the day special.  Mommy did a wonderful job preparing your favorite foods – French fries, sausages, and cookies, while Daddy gave you and your friends tractor rides around the yard.  Hopefully, you’ll never grow out of this passion of yours, and may be, just may be, one day the JD garden mower will be all yours – do you think I could sign you up as chief mower for next summer?

Isabella – my little fairy princess, this last weekend you were Baptized, which means that God now knows that you are pure of heart.  You looked adorable in your white dress, dainty shoes and hat; you were almost good enough to eat.  Auntie Eva and Uncle Laszlo were present as your god parents. Should Mommy and Daddy ever win the lottery and get the chance to run away and live on an island of paradise, then your god parents will take good care of you.  Of course, it is not like I even need to tell you any of this because I am sure that you will never forget the lovely fact that Auntie Eva didn’t put you down for more than one second during the waking hours of last weekend, Mommy and I are working at keeping you elevated for more than 12 hours a day, but we apologize for the fact that we have to attend to more mundane tasks occasionally - running the house in which you live, and to making money so that you can live in the custom in which you deserve.  So, always try to remember, it’s not that we love you any less, we just cannot go around without clean clothes, and unlike you, Mommy, Simon and I have to eat solid food, which is not free or on demand.

I would like to put the record straight about the whole “Daddy exploding rumor” – when allergy season comes around I tend to sneeze a lot, which is a perfectly normal human thing to do.  I am so sorry that you happened to be sleeping on my chest, one day, when a sneeze came from out of the blue – I can see where the exploding fear comes from, but trust me, your Dad is not about to spontaneously blow up into a million pieces while he holds you.  While we’re on the subject of explosions, Mommy and I feel that it is not fair that you hold in your quota of #2 excretions for the day, and then explode them out in one go without any kind of warning.  It’s ok; we make enough money to afford multiple diapers a day, so feel free to disperse – please.

Simon and Isabella, I could write all day about all the cute and embarrassing things that you get up to, but then this would be more like a book than a blog post.  Occasionally you’ll see Mommy and Daddy pulling out our hair because of something you’ve done, but for the larger part you are both wonderful children and provide your Mommy and me with immense joy each and every day. I can speak for us both and say that we hate to be away from you for too long (an hour two when you are screaming does not count, right?). Personally, I feel sad to leave you both every work day and am overjoyed to see you both when I return in the evening. In the morning either me, or your Mommy is there for you when you wake, and we both make sure your safe, snug and warm before you go to bed at night.

I’ll finish this post and leave you with this one thought – everything your Mommy and I strive for in this life is for you, we love you that much.

Stay cute.

Love Daddy.
