Garretts' World

Happenings in the world of the Garretts'

Williamsburg, VA

I took a few days this weekend to spent some well needed R&R in Williamsburg, VA. I stayed with my friend Eva, who is a professor at William & Mary University. During my visit I toured the original colonial grounds, watched a glass blowing exhibit, drove over to Jamestown - a neighboring settlement and dined at some of the exquisite restaurants that Williamsburg has to offer.

Also during my visit, Eva spoiled me with her home cooking and showed me just how bad I am at playing Scrabble.

Would love to find out if the glass-blowing exhibit is ongoing. We will be there in two weeks for my husband's law school reunion at William and mary and want to show our six year old daughter glass-blowing. Any suggestons? I have found no information on the web other than your blog! Also, pray tell, what fine restaurants does Williamsburg have? Our only favorite was Chez Trinh, a french vietnamese cafe which we loved.

Thanks!

I believe the glass blowing is year round and it is in Jamestown off of the parkway. I can check with my friend, who lives in Williamsburg, to be sure. If you're looking for fine dining there are two restaurants that you should not miss - The Trellis and Berrett's. Both restaurants are expensive but well worth an evening out, and they accommodate children.

I was very impressed with the Trellis, I dined with my friend at 5pm in the café section (because you need to book in advance for dinner) on a Saturday evening. I have been to some ritzy restaurants that didn't come close to the experience we had. The food was exquisite, the wine excellent and the service was classy. I could only wonder what dinner must be like. Make sure you leave room for the chocolate desserts, it's what this restaurant is famous for (http://www.thetrellis.com/).

Berrett's is another great restaurant, good if you like seafood. I dined at lunch time and really enjoyed the crab cakes. (http://www.berrets.com/)

If you're looking for authentic colonial restaurants there is one on the main colonial street towards the old capitol (just up from the coffee house ruins on the opposite side of the street). I didn't dine there, but it was packed out at the time.
