I just finished listening to this book-on-tape. The Color of Night is a story about espionage, murder and passion in the world of criminal investigation.
Harry Strand is a retired spy, who is now an established art dealer. After the passing of his wife, a year ago, Harry meets a beautiful Asian woman called Mara Song and becomes involved in an intense romantic relationship. Life is going well for Strand, until his investigation days come back to haunt him when he finds out that his wife's death was no accident, and the perpetrator is out to destroy him also.
I enjoyed this book, although I found it a bit lengthy. Lindsey journeys' the reader (or listener in my case) through a vast number of chapters in the beginning of the book to set up the plot. The book also shifts scenes quickly and introduces new characters without mention of their names until a number of paragraphs into the chapters, which I found made the story a little difficult to follow at first. Once acquainted with the main characters and a third of the way into the book, the plot really started to thicken. Lots of deceit, murder and mystery. I especially liked the way Lindsey described the erotic encounters between Harry and Mara without using colorful descriptions - it tantalized the imagination. The story comes to a climax about 6-10 chapters from the end when the story really becomes quite exhilarating. I was not at all disappointed by the end scene, which completes the story with no hanging questions or disbelief. A recommended read.
